Ultimate Slingshot Band Guide: How to Choose Bands That Actually Fit YOU
90% of how good your slingshot feels and shoots comes down to the bands. Get them wrong and it either feels like you're pulling a truck tire or flicking rubber noodles. Get them right and everything becomes effortless, fast, and deadly accurate.
Step 1: Measure Your Real Draw Length First (This is the #1 mistake people make)
Draw length = distance from the fork to the pouch center when you're at full draw (anchored exactly how you shoot).
How to measure properly:
- Hold your slingshot normally.
- Draw to your natural anchor point (most people anchor at the corner of the mouth/cheek).
- Have someone measure from the fork tip to the center of the pouch (one side only). Don't squash your face.
standard categories:
- Short draw: 170–190 mm
- Medium draw: 190–220 mm
- Long draw: 220-240 mm
- Extra-long draw: 240+ mm
Every 5 cm difference in draw length requires a different band setup. 10 cm+ = completely different bands.

Step 2: Active Band Length Chart
Active length = length of band from fork tie to pouch center when the slingshot is at rest (one side).
| Draw Length | Active Length | Stretch Ratio | Typical Cut Length (for tapered 2012–2515) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short | 170–190mm | 5.0–5.5× | 21–22.5 cm (leaves 1.5–2 cm for tying) |
| Medium | 190–220mm | 4.8–5.3× | 23–25 cm |
| Long | 220–240mm | 4.6–5.0× | 26–28 cm |
| Extra-long | 245–270mm | 4.5–4.8× | 28.5–30+ cm |
Sweet spot for almost everyone: 4.8–5.3× stretch. Above 5.5× = bands explode. Below 4.5× = slow and mushy.
Step 3: Which Taper Should You Actually Use?
- 20-12 (2012): The forever king. Best balance of speed, power, longest life. 99% of shooters should start and stay here.
- 17-12 / 22-10: Slightly faster, slightly lighter pull than 2012. Great for medium/long draw speed freaks.
- 20-15: Noticeably more power. Perfect for 90 cm+ draw with 8.5–10 mm steel.
- 30-18 / 32-18: Heavy hitters for 10–12 mm steel or hunting.
- 30-15 / 28-12: 2025 "speed-heavy" meta — insane velocity with 9–10 mm ammo, but lifespan ~2000 shots.
Rule for life: New shooters buy 2012 and nothing else until they're addicted.

Golden rule: Every +0.05 mm thickness = ~25–30% more pull weight, ~8–12% less speed.
